You functionally double your refueling options when your vehicle accepts both electricity and gas as sources of power. But can PHEV charging be done at home for added flexibility? The short answer is yes, but there's more to it than just a simple plug-in charging cord.

Multi-Level Charging

There are three different levels of charging, each with varying charge times and load capacities. Level 1 represents the base charging capability, utilizing any 120V power source. When you purchase an electric vehicle or PHEV, a Level 1 charging cord will always be included.

Level 2 charging ups the ante. Using any 240V outlet or power connection, this connection can cut your vehicle's charge time in half. It is because of this reduction these are the most commonly used PHEV chargers.

The final level, Level 3, offers the fastest charge time available. Most commonly found at public charging stations, Level 3 charging utilizes a DC connection that can provide as much as 60% charge in only 30 minutes. However, their voltage is too high for many PHEV models.

Installing Your Own Charging Station

If you're fine with a level 1 connection, no installation is required! Simply find your nearest 120V outlet and plug in your charger. Unless you have a 240V outlet available, a Level 2 connection will require some installation. Licensed electricians can absolutely install either a 240V outlet or a dedicated charging station in your home.
