Consumer laws for cars and car-buying exist in every state to protect both buyers and sellers during the entire process. While dealerships for the most part follow these regulations, private sellers may not. No matter where you’re buying your next vehicle from, be sure to keep these rules and laws in mind when you initiate the financing process.

Check the Warranty

When you purchase a new vehicle from a reputable dealership like ours, they will most likely offer some kind of extended warranty to help protect your purchase. However, dealerships are not required to do so. At the time of purchase, be sure to inquire about whether or not a warranty is available, and if it is, you should also check the terms of the warranty before moving forward.

Buyer’s Guide

In addition to the sticker price, all pre-owned vehicles should have a buyer’s guide readily available. This guide will include the VIN, information regarding any open safety recalls and where to find the vehicle history report, and any non-dealer warranties still in effect. If this is not available, then you may want to consider going to another dealership.

“As Is” Clauses

When going over the final contract, be sure to look out for any “as is” clauses. This means the vehicle is being sold exactly as it is at the time of purchase, with no warranty or service obligations from the dealership. Some drivers may find these clauses perfectly acceptable while others may not, but all dealerships are required to disclose if the vehicle is being sold “as is” before the purchase can go through.
